The Risk of Reinventing the Wheel

The information age has seen the extreme proliferation of data from which we've seen incredible advancements and uncountable entrepreneurial opportunities arise. We've also seen significant challenges, privacy concerns and more than a fair share of regulation. Technology advancement has struggled to keep ahead of the wave with the issue du jour being *Risk*.
Different industries look at risk differently. Data leakage or loss, physical and logical breach, financial exposure, etc. all have their impact. There is one area of risk that is often overlooked but can result in equally destructive results; it is something that I see many of our clients struggle with at the outset of every project. This risk is something I like to call “evolutionary risk” or the risk of blindly evolving your current processes via automation. Automation can be a boon to an organization’s bottom line however, when care is not taken to understand the process, the results can be disastrous.
If there is one thing a company can do to help mitigate this risk when looking towards Identity and Access Governance processes, it’s this…listen to the experts. I spend a great deal of time working with clients helping them understand the pitfalls and benefits of different approaches to their implementations. Each client believes they are different than all the others but guess what? You’re not all that different. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel! Take the advice of the experts! We’ve been doing this for over a decade and have seen just about anything you can come up with.
While it may feel like an insurmountable task, willingness to make a small change in your internal processes can result in your ability to take advantage of years of process improvement experience we’ve gathered across the industry. Take a risk yourself and listen, the reward will certainly pay off.
